High ResolutionGraphic Design is probably among the least respected and most misunderstood professions in the world. Not many others have to put up with shit like this, but we do it every fucking day. There’s a global misconception about what we do as designers. “just sitting in front of a computer and drawing” equates to probably something like 7% of the work we do. You can’t be a graphic designer because you know how to use fucking photoshop, it is not that fucking simple.
You wouldn’t go to a dentist and say, “hey, fix my teeth and maybe if I like your work I’ll pay you more” because most people know the effort and dedication it takes to become and be a dentist. They don’t know that about designers and it’s the most frustrating thing trying to convince them of it.It blows my mind.
People without a lot of technical expertise completely devalue people with technical expertise.
It’s even worse when people WITH technical expertise devalue you abilities because they “understand design”. Working at an architecture firm is one of the most degrading work experiences I’ve had so far. Having a creative mind does equate to anyone being a graphic designer, it only fuels their self righteous ideas that “they can do this too”. I’ve been flat out insulted and all my efforts cheapened by that majority of people I’ve worked with at said architecture firm. I doubt I’ll ever work an in-house position ever again, it’s nothing but misconceptions and short comings of your intelligence and worth.
